The Flip: a standard in Hip-Hop, taking something that was already dope & freaking it just enough to where it becomes something new while still maintaining what made it dope in the first place.
KP & Envyi's "Shorty Swing My Way" was a minor hit back in 97 when it dropped & it's definitely inspired by the whole Miami Bass sound & the whole So So Def Bass All-Stars movement that had popped up in Atlanta at the time. Wasn't that huge here in New Yok City, but BET helped it get plenty of shine. Flash forward 11 years later & New York upstart MC, Charles Hamilton releases his first official video for his self-produced single & one of my favorite songs of 2008, "Brooklyn Girl".
Notice any similarities? Here's the audio, for all you collectors/stockpilers/completists/packrats
Kp & Envyi - Shorty Swing My Way
Charles Hamilton - Brooklyn Girl
Bonus: Brooklyn Girl (Instrumental)
Easter Egg: Look for cameos from Sleepy Brown & a young Polow Da Don in that KP & Envyi clip. Polow's supposed to be playing KP's "love interest" in the clip, but given his self proclimation as the "King Of White Girls", I'm pretty sure he was really checking out Envyi lol.
